Palms come up rarely, and when they do it is a garden planting on a big leafy plot — one beside a pool, a pair at a gate — now surrounded by trees two and three times their height. That does two things to the job. The first is to the palm itself. One that has grown up in the shade of taller trees is usually drawn and thin, often leaning towards whatever light it could reach, and it will not thicken up afterwards, because a palm does not lay down new wood each year the way an oak does. The second is to the swing room.
