Palm Tree Removal & Cleaning in Newlands

Palms are less common in Newlands than oaks, but where they exist they're usually old, very tall and boxed in by neighbouring walls. Every piece has to be roped and lowered — there's simply nowhere in a Newlands garden to drop a full palm trunk safely.

What Newlands is like to work in

Palm Removal on a Newlands property

Newlands is one of the wettest, greenest pockets of Cape Town, and its gardens grow huge — oaks, planes and pines that get heavy with growth and shed limbs in the winter storms blowing off the mountain. Our climbing crew thins, fells and clears these large trees safely on Newlands' tight, established plots. Free quotes, and we clear the site properly. That's the backdrop to most palm removal work we do here.

    Trees we see here

huge oaks, London planes and pines fed by the highest rainfall in Cape Town

    Access on site

narrow older streets and tight side passages, often with no rear access at all

    The usual problem

waterlogged root plates and winter storm limb-drop off the mountain

Palms are a Cape Town signature, but a neglected one drops heavy fronds, harbours rats, and gets dangerous when it's tall. We climb and remove palms entirely, or clean them up — dead fronds, seed stalks and skirt. Prices published below by height, fixed in writing before we start. The method itself doesn't change much across the city. If you want the deeper version, our palm tree removal & cleaning page walks through the kit, the sequence and what moves the price. What changes in Newlands is the ground you're working on.

Palms are priced on height and access more than anything else — our breakdown of what drives tree work prices in Cape Town. And if you'd rather just see the standard of work first, there are photos from Peter's actual jobs — real crew, real trees, no stock photography.

    On the ground here

Palm Removal on a Newlands property

Most Newlands gardens have no palm in them at all. If yours does, it is usually a single one, it is old, and somebody planted it as a novelty in a street of oaks. What that history has done to the tree is worth understanding before you decide anything. It has spent decades reaching for light between much bigger canopies, so the trunk is long and clean and the crown sits up above the oak line. That matters, because the choice between cleaning the crown and taking the whole palm out rests entirely on what is up there, and under a Newlands canopy you genuinely cannot see it from the patio. So the first thing we do is get eyes on the crown properly. Below it, the ground is the other Newlands problem. Under a closed canopy it stays wet for most of the winter, and a loaded barrow run across soft lawn leaves ruts you will be looking at until spring. We board or mat the route out before the first load crosses it.

What we check before quoting palm removal in Newlands

Access is the first question and usually the shortest conversation, because on the older plots here there is often no way round the back at all. We measure the side passage, check what the gate actually opens to, and work out whether a barrow fits or whether it is bundles and buckets. Then we look up. A palm boxed in by walls needs somewhere to land each frond and each round, and where the neighbouring oaks lean over the boundary there may be no clear line to lower into — that is when we rig off the palm itself and take shorter sections. We also want to know what is on the far side of each wall, because a glasshouse or a tiled roof within reach of a swinging piece changes the method rather than just the price. Street parking gets agreed beforehand instead of found on the morning.

    How it runs

Our palm removal process in Newlands

    1

    Assess height and access

Tall palms wedged between houses or on the verge need careful planning — we check the rope routes and drop zones before we start.

    2

    Climb and strip the fronds

Our climber works up the trunk removing dead and live fronds, seed pods and skirt, either to clean the palm up or to prep it for removal.

    3

    Section down the trunk

For full removal we cut the bare trunk down in controlled sections, lowering each piece so nothing below is at risk.

    4

    Clear the heavy debris

Palm fronds and trunk sections are heavy and bulky — we load and haul the lot, and sweep the street or driveway clean.

Most Newlands jobs turn out to be more than one thing. The tree that needs palm removal usually leaves something else behind. We quote it all together rather than sending you three separate invoices.

Palm Removal elsewhere in the Southern Suburbs

The Southern Suburbs runs together, and the trees don't stop at the suburb boundary — so we're usually on this side of town anyway. The same crew handles palm removal in Constantia, palm removal in Rondebosch and palm removal in Claremont. If you're closer to one of those than to Newlands, it makes no difference to the price. The call-out is the same.
