The trees we deal with most in Noordhoek

Noordhoek isn't a suburb-sized tree problem. On the smallholdings and larger plots out here the work gets measured in stands rather than in individual trees. Port Jackson and rooikrans have taken over whole back sections of properties, growing into thickets you have to cut your way into, and there are mature bluegums and self-seeded pines through the valley on top of that. Mixed in among it you'll find genuine indigenous trees worth keeping — milkwoods especially — which is exactly why we walk the ground and mark what stays before anything comes down. The older lanes have big planted oaks around the paddocks, and those want careful pruning, not felling. It's common to end up quoting two entirely different jobs on the same property: crown work at the front, brush clearing at the back. The other thing worth knowing before you start is that mature rooikrans is good braai wood and there's real demand for it in the Cape, so on a plot carrying a decent stand it's worth raising at quoting stage rather than after the trailer has left.

Getting to the tree: access on Noordhoek properties

The driveways are the thing out here. A long, soft sand track that a bakkie handles every day will bog a fully loaded truck to its axles, and a chipper on a trailer is worse again — so we look at the approach, the turning space and the standing ground before we commit to anything. Sometimes the answer is that material gets shuttled out in smaller loads to firmer ground. Paddock gates are sized for a horsebox, not a chip truck, and the fence lines aren't always where the title diagram suggests. On horse properties we work to closed gates and keep the noise contained, because a chainsaw and a chipper starting up unannounced does nobody's horses any good. And on the low-lying parts near the wetland, ground that carries a vehicle in February will not carry it in July.

The valley funnels the summer south-easter, and out here there isn't much standing between a tree and the wind — no rows of houses breaking it up the way there are in a tight suburb. That's what shapes the crowns you see leaning inland. The bigger risk, though, is winter. Noordhoek sits low and holds water, and the wetland ground stays saturated for weeks after heavy rain. A root plate with plenty of grip in dry sand loses it completely in a waterlogged one, which is why trees here tend to go over whole, root ball and all, instead of snapping off partway up. If a big tree on your plot has started lifting the ground on one side, that's the one to look at before the rains, not after.

Permissions and protected trees around Noordhoek

Port Jackson (Acacia saligna) and rooikrans (Acacia cyclops) are both Category 1b listed invasives, which puts a control duty on the person in control of the land. You don't need a permit to remove them — the law is asking you to. It also catches people at sale: regulation 29(3) requires a seller to notify the buyer in writing of listed invasive species on the property before the sale agreement is concluded. Protected indigenous trees run the other way entirely. The white milkwood, Sideroxylon inerme, is protected under section 12 of the National Forests Act and needs a licence before it's touched, even on private land. And if your plot borders Table Mountain National Park, anything past the boundary line is neither yours nor ours to cut.
