Newlands has been hit harder by the polyphagous shot hole borer than almost anywhere else in the city. Streets here were lined with box elder, which sits at the very top of the beetle's host list, and enough of them died that the City started a replanting programme in 2025 — putting water oaks into roads that used to be box elder avenues. If you still have a box elder standing, that is the first thing we want to look at. The rest of the canopy is oak and plane, both of which the beetle breeds in quite happily, plus the tall pines along the upper edge of the suburb where the gardens run into the forest. Everything grows fast here because of the rain, so a tree reaches a serious size sooner than its owner expected and the crown ends up sitting on the roof rather than near it.
