The trees we deal with most in Table View

Table View is a young suburb that has grown hard since the 1970s, so there is very little here that has been standing for a century. Almost every tree in a Table View garden was put there by somebody, and what survives the conditions is a short list — palms, milkwoods, the tough coastal screening trees people plant along a boundary for privacy, and whatever went in with the street. Anything soft-leaved and thirsty tends not to last. Then there is what arrived on its own. The dune strip and open ground behind the beach carry rooikrans, Acacia cyclops, in dense thickets, and it walks into gardens and onto vacant erven from there. Rooikrans is listed Category 1b, which means controlling it on your property is a legal duty rather than a gardening preference. The one mercy is that it usually just dies when it is cut low, below the lowest branch, instead of coppicing back at you the way Port Jackson does.

The wind is the whole story in Table View. The south-easter comes straight across Table Bay onto this stretch of coast through the warmer months — it is exactly why the beach up the road is a kitesurfing spot — and it carries salt with it. Trees respond by growing away from it, so you end up with a permanently one-sided canopy, all the weight on the leeward side, and a trunk that leans because it grew that shape rather than because anything has failed yet. Foliage on the seaward face burns back and stays sparse. Put that top-heavy, one-sided crown on loose sand and you have the classic Table View failure: in a hard blow the root plate lifts on one side and the whole tree goes over intact rather than snapping.

Permissions and protected trees around Table View

The tree to know about here is the white milkwood, Sideroxylon inerme. It is a coastal species, it is on the national protected list under section 12 of the National Forests Act 84 of 1998, and that applies to a gnarled old one in a Table View back garden exactly as it does to one out on the dunes. Cutting or removing it without a licence is an offence, so if a milkwood is in the way, that is a conversation before it is a job. Verge trees belong to the City of Cape Town, and pruning or felling one needs written permission from the City's Recreation and Parks department. Rooikrans runs the other way: no permit needed, because you are required to control it. Just do not dump the cuttings on open ground — seed-bearing material moved around is how those thickets spread in the first place.
