The trees we deal with most in Muizenberg

Muizenberg gardens are working with sand, not soil. Along the older village and beachfront plots you'll find white milkwoods that have been standing longer than the houses around them, along with Norfolk Island pines, palms and the occasional big gum on the stands running up the mountainside. Marina da Gama is a different generation of tree altogether — that development went up in the 1970s, so those gardens were planted rather than inherited, and a lot of what went in for quick shade is now well past the size anyone had in mind. Fast growers in loose sand are what we get called to most. They put down a wide, shallow plate instead of a deep anchor, and once the crown gets heavy on one side the whole tree starts to lean. Salt does the rest, browning off the seaward face until the tree carries all its weight inland.

Getting to the tree: access on Muizenberg properties

We're based at 58 Frederick Street in Capricorn, so Muizenberg is the short trip for us rather than the long one. Access here splits three ways. In Marina da Gama the back of the garden is water — no rear gate, no side lane, nothing comes out that way — so every branch and every log gets carried to the street frontage and loaded there. We set the drop zones up accordingly and we're careful about what ends up in the canal. On the older plots climbing the mountain side, gardens are stepped and terraced, the lanes are tight, and there's often nowhere for a truck to stand except the road itself. Down near the beach the problem is underfoot: sandy verges and soft shoulders that a loaded vehicle will dig itself into, so we stay on the hard surface and walk the material out.

Wind, weather and what it does to Muizenberg trees

Muizenberg gets an easier ride from the south-easter than most of Cape Town. The wind comes over the spine of the peninsula and out across False Bay, so on the days the Atlantic side is properly blown out, this side of the mountain stays comparatively calm. That fools people into thinking wind isn't the issue here. What does the damage is slower and more constant: salt-laden air off the bay burning the exposed side of a tree year after year, and sand that never grips a root plate the way heavier ground does. Then a winter front arrives with rain, the sand turns to slurry, and a tree that has been quietly leaning for a decade goes over in one night. The ones we take down after a storm are almost always the ones that were already lopsided.

Permissions and protected trees around Muizenberg

The white milkwood, Sideroxylon inerme, is protected nationally under section 12 of the National Forests Act — number 579 on the list gazetted as Government Notice 4496 on 13 March 2024. It grows on these coastal plots, and owning the land makes no difference: cutting or pruning a protected milkwood needs a licence from the department first. If there's a gnarled, dark-leaved old tree in your garden, get it identified before anyone starts a saw. Anything on the pavement or road reserve belongs to the City of Cape Town rather than to you, so that's an application to them, not a job for us. And where a Marina garden runs down to the water's edge, we'd want to check whether the estuary reserve has a say before planning the work. Better to ask first.
