The trees we deal with most in Llandudno

What grows in Llandudno is coastal bush more than garden planting, and milkwood is the signature of it — the walk down to the beach goes through milkwood, and it's in and around the properties as well. That matters for a specific reason: white milkwood is protected nationally, so it can't simply be taken out because it's in the way. Above and behind it sits fynbos on the granite slopes, which we leave alone. The trees that do come down here are the planted ones — pines, cypresses and the odd gum put in for screening decades ago, now well over the roofline, leaning over a neighbour's deck or shading a house that was designed for sun. Most of those calls are about height and fire, not about a tree being sick.

Getting to the tree: access on Llandudno properties

This is the hardest access of the four Atlantic Seaboard areas we cover. The village is built into a granite slope of enormous boulders, the roads are narrow and fold back on themselves, and there's frequently nowhere to stand a truck within sensible reach of the tree, let alone turn one around. Driveways are short and steep, and the ground between the road and the tree is often boulder rather than lawn, so a chipper can't be wheeled to it. In practice that means more rigging and more carrying: we bring the tree down in small pieces, lower them clear of the roof and the deck, and move the timber out to the road on foot. It takes longer than the same tree on flat ground. We'd rather say so in the quote than surprise you on the day.

Wind, weather and what it does to Llandudno trees

Llandudno is exposed on every side. The summer south-easter accelerates down this stretch of coast and the winter north-westerly fronts come in off the open Atlantic, so trees here get worked from both directions with salt in the air right through. The other factor is fire. The slopes above are fynbos, which is fire-adapted and burns readily, and vegetation fires have run through this part of the coast more than once. That changes what pruning is for. With a house standing against the bush, cutting back overhanging limbs and clearing dead material away from walls and roofs is about defensible space, not tidiness — and it's the most common reason people here phone us in the dry months.

Permissions and protected trees around Llandudno

Llandudno is the one place on this coast where it's safest to assume a tree may be protected until you know otherwise. White milkwood (Sideroxylon inerme) sits on the national protected list under section 12 of the National Forests Act, and there are milkwoods right through the bush here. Cutting, damaging or moving one without a licence is an offence, wherever it grows and whoever owns the ground. If you aren't sure what you're looking at, we'll identify it before anything gets quoted, and we won't take one down without the paperwork in place. Beyond that, the slopes above the village are Table Mountain National Park, so anything near your upper boundary needs the line confirmed first — and pavement and road-reserve trees belong to the City.
